The Final Prophet – Muḥammad ﷺ

The Seal of the Prophets | The Mercy to All the Worlds | The Best of Creation

1. His Noble Lineage and Birth

The story of Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, the last and final Messenger of Allāh, begins with a lineage of purity, nobility, and honor. He was born into the respected tribe of Quraysh, descending directly from Prophet Ibrāhīm (عليه السلام) through his son Ismāʿīl (عليه السلام). His father was ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and his mother was Āminah bint Wahb, both from noble families. Allāh chose the purest ancestry for His final messenger. The Prophet ﷺ said,
“Indeed, Allāh chose Kinānah from the children of Ismāʿīl, and He chose Quraysh from Kinānah, and He chose Banū Hāshim from Quraysh, and He chose me from Banū Hāshim.”
(Muslim)

In the year 570 CE, known as the Year of the Elephant — when Abraha tried to destroy the Kaʿbah but was miraculously defeated by Allāh through a flock of birds (as mentioned in Surah Al-Fīl) — Muḥammad ﷺ was born in Makkah, an orphan even before his arrival. His father passed away while his mother was pregnant. Despite this, his birth was surrounded by signs of divine favor. The scholars report that on the night he was born, light radiated from his mother’s womb, illuminating the palaces of Syria, as if foretelling the arrival of a light that would reach all corners of the earth.

He was named Muḥammad, meaning “the praised one”, a name not common among the Arabs at the time — a name divinely inspired.

2. His Early Childhood and Youth

Muḥammad ﷺ was sent to be nursed by a Bedouin woman named Ḥalīmah al-Saʿdiyyah, in the desert as was customary among the Quraysh, for the children to grow in strength, language, and health. During his time with Ḥalīmah, her household witnessed immense blessings and prosperity. Animals that were once barren began producing milk, and their livelihood improved. One day, while he was playing with other children, two angels came, opened his chest, and cleansed his heart from any impurity. This miraculous event is known as the “Shaqq aṣ-Ṣadr” (the splitting of the chest) — a sign that this child was unlike any other.

After returning to Makkah, his mother passed away when he was only six years old, leaving him in the care of his grandfather, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who loved him dearly. Two years later, his grandfather also passed away, and the young Muḥammad ﷺ was entrusted to his kind and protective uncle, Abū Ṭālib.

Despite growing up without the warmth of parental care, Muḥammad ﷺ was never without the care of Allāh. He grew up to be honest, gentle, trustworthy, and beloved by all who knew him. He never participated in idol worship, immorality, or tribal disputes. He earned the title "al-Amīn" (The Trustworthy) long before his prophethood.

He worked as a shepherd and later as a merchant, developing a reputation for fair trade, humility, and moral uprightness. People would entrust him with their goods and secrets, and he never betrayed them.

3. His Marriage to Khadījah (رضي الله عنها)

At the age of 25, Muḥammad ﷺ was approached by Khadījah bint Khuwaylid, a noble and wealthy businesswoman of Quraysh. She had noticed his honesty and character in trade and offered him a position to manage her caravans. Upon witnessing his exceptional conduct, she proposed marriage. Despite being 15 years older, their marriage was one of deep love, loyalty, and tranquility. They had several children together, including Fāṭimah (RA), who would become the mother of his noble descendants.

Khadījah (RA) was his greatest supporter, standing by him through the most difficult years of his life. Their home was one of warmth, worship, and compassion. The Prophet ﷺ never married another woman during her lifetime. Even after her death, he remembered her fondly and would praise her often.

4. The First Revelation: Light Descends Upon Earth

At the age of 40, Muḥammad ﷺ began to seek solitude in the cave of Ḥirā’, reflecting deeply on the corruption, injustice, and spiritual emptiness of his society. During one of these nights, the Angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) came to him with a powerful revelation:

“Read!”
He replied, “I am not one who reads.”
The angel embraced him and repeated:
“Read in the name of your Lord who created — created man from a clot. Read, and your Lord is Most Generous.”
(Surah Al-ʿAlaq 96:1–3)

This moment marked the beginning of prophethood — the beginning of the final and universal message to mankind. The Qur’an began to descend in pieces over the next 23 years, guiding, healing, and transforming hearts.
