Prophet Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
The Prophet Sent to the People of Sodom
🌟 Who Was Prophet Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)?
Prophet Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)—known as Lot in Biblical tradition—was a righteous Prophet of Allah. He was the nephew of Prophet Ibrāhīm (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and migrated with him in his early life, eventually being sent as a Prophet to the corrupt cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (located near the Dead Sea in modern-day Jordan/Palestine).
His mission was to call his people away from immorality, corruption, and particularly sexual deviation, a sin that had never before been committed by mankind in that way.
📖 Mention in the Qur’an
Prophet Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is mentioned in multiple Surahs of the Qur’an, including:
-
Surah Al-A‘rāf (7:80–84)
-
Surah Hūd (11:77–83)
-
Surah Ash-Shuʿarā’ (26:160–175)
-
Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt (29:28–35)
-
Surah Al-Qamar (54:33–40)
"And [mention] Lūṭ, when he said to his people: 'Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds?'"
— Surah Al-A‘rāf 7:80
🏙️ The City of Sodom – A Center of Sin
Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was sent to the city of Sodom (Sadūm), where the people had become infamous for:
-
Normalizing homosexual acts openly
-
Engaging in highway robbery and looting
-
Rejecting all forms of morality
-
Mocking purity, marriage, and faith
This was not just a matter of individual sin, but a societal norm—a collective rebellion against the fitrah (natural disposition).
"Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people."
— Surah Al-A‘rāf 7:81
🗣️ Prophet Lūṭ’s Call to Truth
With wisdom and mercy, Prophet Lūṭ called his people to:
-
Return to the natural, moral way
-
Abandon corruption
-
Worship Allah alone
"Do you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy Messenger. So fear Allah and obey me."
— Surah Ash-Shuʿarā’ 26:161–163
But instead of listening, his people mocked him, accusing him of being too pure:
"Expel the family of Lūṭ from your city! Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure!"
— Surah An-Naml 27:56
They rejected not only his message—but righteousness itself.
👨👩👧 Lūṭ’s Family: Belief and Betrayal
While Lūṭ was a Prophet of Allah, not all of his household believed. His wife was among those who betrayed his mission.
"Allah sets forth an example... the wife of Lūṭ. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them..."
— Surah At-Taḥrīm 66:10
She secretly sympathized with the disbelieving people, and would eventually face the same punishment as them.
Only Lūṭ and his daughters believed.
👼 The Arrival of the Angels
Allah sent three angels in the form of handsome men—Jibrīl, Mīkā’īl, and Isrāfīl (عليهم السلام)—first to Prophet Ibrāhīm, to give him the good news of Ishāq’s birth and then to visit Prophet Lūṭ to bring the final warning to his people.
When they came to Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he was distressed, knowing how the corrupt people would behave toward strangers.
"And when Our messengers came to Lūṭ, he was anguished for them and felt discomfort for them..."
— Surah Hūd 11:77
The men of the town came rushing to his home, demanding to commit evil acts with the guests.
💔 Prophet Lūṭ’s Desperate Plea
In agony, he pleaded with his people:
"O my people, here are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me..."
— Surah Hūd 11:78
(Note: Scholars say “daughters” refers to the women of the city under his care as a Prophet.)
Their response?
"You know that we have no interest in your daughters!"
— Surah Hūd 11:79
They were blinded by lust and sin.
⚖️ Allah’s Final Decree and the Punishment
Then the angels revealed their true identity to Prophet Lūṭ:
"O Lūṭ, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; they will never reach you. So set out with your family during the night..."
— Surah Hūd 11:81
He was told:
-
Leave the city at night
-
Do not look back
-
Take only the believers
-
His wife would be left behind
Then, at sunrise—
"We turned [the cities] upside down and rained upon them stones of hard clay, arranged in layers..."
— Surah Hūd 11:82
Allah completely overturned the land, destroying every trace of the disbelievers.
The Dead Sea area today is believed to be the site of this punishment.

The story of Prophet Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is not just a historical event—it’s a divine warning for all nations who normalize immoral behavior.
"Indeed, in that is a sign for those who give thought. And indeed, [the cities] are on an existing road."
— Surah Al-Ḥijr 15:75–76
