Prophet Nuh A.S.

Prophet Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

The First Messenger to All of Mankind

🌟 Who Was Prophet Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)?

Prophet Nūḥ (Noah) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is one of the greatest and earliest Prophets mentioned in the Qur’an. He is recognized as the first Messenger sent to all of mankind after the people of Prophet Ādam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and Idrīs (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) gradually fell into shirk (associating partners with Allah). He was a Prophet for over 950 years.

Allah mentions him repeatedly throughout the Qur’an and honors his patience, sincerity, and strength in da‘wah (calling to Allah).

“Indeed, We sent Nūḥ to his people, [saying], ‘Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment.’”
Surah Nūḥ 71:1

📖 Prophet Nūḥ in the Qur’an

Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is mentioned in over 28 Surahs, including:

  • Surah Hūd (11:25–49)

  • Surah Al-Mu’minūn (23:23–30)

  • Surah Nūḥ (entire Surah)

  • Surah Al-A‘rāf (7:59–64)

  • Surah Ash-Shu‘arā (26:105–122)

He is also one of the five elite Prophets of high rank: Ulū’l-ʿAzm (أُولُو الْعَزْمِ).

🏞️ The Rise of Idolatry

After Prophet Ādam and his descendants, the people remained on the straight path for a while. Righteous men—like Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr—were revered for their piety. After their deaths, people built statues to remember them. Over generations, Shaitān tricked them into worshiping these statues, introducing idol worship for the first time.

Thus, shirk spread across the earth.

🗣️ The Mission of Prophet Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Allah appointed Nūḥ as a Prophet to guide his people back to Tawheed (Oneness of Allah).

“O my people! Worship Allah! You have no deity other than Him.”
Surah Al-A‘rāf 7:59

He warned them sincerely, day and night, publicly and privately. He used gentle reasoning, heartfelt reminders, and strong warnings.

“My Lord! I invited my people night and day, but my invitation only increased their aversion.”
Surah Nūḥ 71:5–6

🧕 Resistance from His People

Most of the people mocked him. They saw him as:

  • A mere human like them

  • A man followed only by the poor

  • Someone “insane” for rejecting their idols

“They said, ‘Shall we believe you while the lowest follow you?’”
Surah Ash-Shu‘arā 26:111

Despite their ridicule, Prophet Nūḥ never gave up.

“And I do not ask you for any reward, my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.”
Surah Ash-Shu‘arā 26:109

💔 Rejection by Family

Even his own wife and one of his sons rejected his message.

“Allah sets forth an example... the wife of Nūḥ and the wife of Lūṭ. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them...”
Surah At-Taḥrīm 66:10

They aligned themselves with the disbelievers and refused his da‘wah.

⌛ Final Plea and Allah’s Decree

After centuries of rejection and mockery, Prophet Nūḥ turned to Allah:

“My Lord! Do not leave upon the earth any of the disbelievers. Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants...”
Surah Nūḥ 71:26–27

Allah responded by commanding him to build an Ark (a massive ship).

“Construct the ship under Our observation and instruction, and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned.”
Surah Hūd 11:37

🛠️ The Construction of the Ark

Nūḥ began building the Ark in the middle of a dry land. The people mocked him:

“He is building a ship in the desert! What a madman!”

But Nūḥ remained patient. With every mockery, he replied:

“If you mock me now, I will soon mock you just as you mock me.”
Surah Hūd 11:38

He followed Allah’s instructions carefully, using wood and nails to construct a huge vessel that could withstand the greatest storm in history.

🌊 The Great Flood Begins

When Allah’s command came, water began gushing from the ground and pouring from the skies. Torrents of rain fell, and the earth overflowed.

“So We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down. And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs, so the waters met for a matter already predestined.”
Surah Al-Qamar 54:11–12

Nūḥ was commanded to board the Ark with:

  • The believers (only a few accepted his message)

  • A pair of each kind of animal

  • His family (except those who disbelieved)

💔 A Son Lost to Disbelief

As the waves rose, Nūḥ saw his disbelieving son trying to climb a mountain to escape the flood. He called out:

“O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers!”
Surah Hūd 11:42

His son arrogantly replied:

“I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.”

Nūḥ pleaded, but the son drowned. Allah said:

“He is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was unrighteous.”
Surah Hūd 11:46

🕊️ End of the Flood and the Ark’s Landing

After 40 days and nights, Allah commanded the rain to stop and the earth to absorb the water.

“And it was said, ‘O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain].’ And the water subsided...”
Surah Hūd 11:44

The Ark came to rest on Mount Jūdī, believed to be in modern-day Turkey.

🤲 Gratitude and a New Beginning

Prophet Nūḥ stepped off the Ark and immediately praised Allah:

“O my Lord, cause me to land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].”
Surah Al-Mu’minūn 23:29

The earth was now free from shirk and corruption, and the survivors repopulated it. Nūḥ’s descendants became the next generations of mankind.

🕊️ The End of a Prophet’s Journey

Prophet Nūḥ continued to worship and serve Allah after the flood. He died a noble death after fulfilling his mission for centuries.

“Peace be upon Nūḥ in all the worlds.”
Surah As-Sāffāt 37:79
