Prophet Ibrāhīm (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
The Khalīl of Allah – The Father of Prophets
🌟 Who Was Prophet Ibrāhīm (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)?
Prophet Ibrāhīm (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known as Abraham in the Bible, is one of the five greatest Prophets (Ulul ‘Azm). He is revered in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, and holds the unique title: "Khalīlullāh" (the close friend of Allah).
His life was a journey of faith, sacrifice, da‘wah, and legacy. He was the ancestor of many prophets including Ishāq (Isaac), Ya‘qūb (Jacob), Yūsuf (Joseph), Mūsā (Moses), ʿĪsā (Jesus) and the final Prophet, Muḥammad ﷺ.
🏙️ Birth and Upbringing in a Land of Idolatry
Ibrāhīm (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was born in Babylonia (Iraq) during a time when his people worshipped idols, stars, and celestial objects. His own father, Āzar, was a sculptor who made idols for worship.
Despite growing up in such an environment, Ibrāhīm questioned everything. Allah had given him wisdom and sharp insight from a young age.
"Indeed, We had given Ibrāhīm his guidance before, and We were well acquainted with him."
— Surah Al-Anbiyā’ 21:51
🧠 His Search for Truth and Tawḥīd
Ibrāhīm pondered the universe—the sun, moon, stars—but realized all were created and could not be gods.
"When the night covered him, he saw a star. He said, ‘This is my lord.’ But when it set, he said, ‘I do not like those that disappear.’”
— Surah Al-An‘ām 6:76
This profound reflection helped him realize that the Creator of everything must be One, Unseen, and Ever-Present.
"Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah."
— Surah Al-An‘ām 6:79
🗿 Confronting His Father and People
With courage, he confronted his father:
"O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear, does not see, and does not benefit you at all?"
— Surah Maryam 19:42
But his father rejected him harshly and threatened to stone him.
Still, Ibrāhīm remained kind and patient, replying:
"Peace be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me."
— Surah Maryam 19:47
He then turned to his people and exposed the falsehood of idol worship.
🪓 The Destruction of Idols
To teach his people a lesson, Ibrāhīm (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) devised a bold plan. During a festival, when the people left, he entered the temple and destroyed all the idols, leaving only the largest one, placing the axe on its shoulder.
When the people returned, shocked, they asked who did this. Ibrāhīm said:
"Rather, this—the biggest of them—did it. So ask them, if they should be able to speak."
— Surah Al-Anbiyā’ 21:63
They were stunned—but out of pride and arrogance, they chose punishment over submission to truth.
🔥 Thrown into the Fire
They decided to kill Ibrāhīm by burning him alive in a massive fire pit.
But Allah protected His beloved servant:
"We said, 'O fire, be coolness and peace upon Ibrāhīm.'"
— Surah Al-Anbiyā’ 21:69
He emerged unharmed—a miracle witnessed by the entire city.
🛫 His Migration and Dawah
After continuous opposition, Ibrāhīm migrated with his believing wife Sārah and nephew Lūṭ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) to the blessed lands: Shām (Greater Syria) and later Palestine.
He spread the message of Tawḥīd far and wide, calling people with patience and wisdom.
🧡 The Supplication for a Son
Years passed, but Ibrāhīm had no child. In old age, he turned to Allah:
"My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."
— Surah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:100
Allah answered his du‘ā:
"So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy."
— Surah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:101
This boy was Ismā‘īl (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), born to his second wife Hājar, in old age—a miraculous blessing.
🕋 The Sacrifice – A Supreme Test
To test Ibrāhīm’s love for Allah, he was commanded in a dream to sacrifice his beloved son.
Without hesitation, both father and son submitted:
[Ismā‘īl said:] ‘O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.’
— Surah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:102
As he placed his son down—
"And We called to him, ‘O Ibrāhīm, You have fulfilled the vision.’"
— Surah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:104–105
Allah replaced Ismā‘īl with a ram from Jannah, and his willingness to sacrifice became the basis of Eid al-Adhā for all time.
🕋 Building the Ka‘bah
Later, Ibrāhīm and Ismā‘īl (عَلَيْهِمَا ٱلسَّلَامُ) were commanded to build the Ka‘bah, the House of Allah in Makkah.
"And [mention] when Ibrāhīm was raising the foundations of the House, and Ismā‘īl, [saying]: 'Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.'"
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127
They raised the walls with sincerity and made powerful du‘ās for their descendants.
👪 His Second Son – Ishāq
From his first wife Sārah, Allah gave Ibrāhīm another son—Ishāq (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who would father Ya‘qūb (Jacob) and the lineage of Bani Isrā’īl.
Thus, Ibrāhīm became the father of two great prophetic lines:
-
Ismā‘īl → Muḥammad ﷺ
-
Ishāq → Mūsā, ʿĪsā, Yūsuf, etc.

-
A righteous family

🕋 Mention in the Sunnah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"I saw Ibrāhīm (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) on the Night of Miʿrāj with his back against the Bayt al-Maʿmūr (Heavenly Ka‘bah)."
