Ruqyah & illness

🕋 Ruqyah & Healing Through the Qur’an and Sunnah

Ruqyah refers to the practice of reciting specific verses from the Qur’an and Duas from the Sunnah for protection and healing—spiritual, physical, or emotional. This was regularly practiced by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and is considered part of the Islamic tradition of seeking Shifa (healing) through divine means.

✨ What is Ruqyah?

Definition:
In Arabic, الرقية الشرعية (Ruqyah Shar‘iyyah) is the legitimate form of spiritual healing, based on the Qur’an, authentic Duas, and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

It is used for:

  • Healing from illness or pain.

  • Removing evil eye (Ayn), black magic (Sihr), or possession (Jinn).

  • Strengthening faith and relieving anxiety or fear.

🌿 Ruqyah is Sunnah

🔹 Hadith - Narrated Aisha (رضي الله عنها):

"Whenever Allah's Messenger ﷺ became sick, he would recite Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas) and blow over himself."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5016)

📌 Meaning: The Prophet ﷺ himself used Ruqyah, showing it is a Sunnah and a blessed means of seeking healing.

🌟 Conditions of Authentic Ruqyah (Shari’ah-Compliant)

  1. Must be with Qur’anic verses or authentic Duas.

  2. Must be in clear Arabic or understandable language.

  3. Must believe healing comes from Allah, not from the words themselves.

  4. Should not include shirk, charms, talismans, or practices not from Islam.

📖 Qur’anic Verses for Ruqyah

1. Surah Al-Fatihah – The Opening

"In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. All praise is for Allah—Lord of all worlds..."
🕊 (Surah Al-Fatihah: 1–7)
This Surah is called “Ash-Shifa” (The Cure) and was used for Ruqyah.

Hadith Proof:

A Sahabi recited Surah Al-Fatihah over a poisoned man, and he was healed.
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5736)

2. Ayat al-Kursi – The Throne Verse

"Allah! There is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence..."
📖 (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)

🔐 Used for protection from Jinn, evil eye, and during fear.

3. Surah Al-Baqarah (Selected Verses)

A. Verse 2:102 – Regarding Black Magic:

"...But the people learned [from them] that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone except by permission of Allah..."

📍 This verse affirms that magic can affect people but healing lies with Allah.

B. Verse 2:286 – Seeking Ease & Mercy:

"Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear..."

4. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq & An-Naas – The Three Quls

Recite these three times for complete protection.

A. Surah Al-Ikhlas (Purity):

"Say: He is Allah, the One..."
(112:1-4)

B. Surah Al-Falaq (Daybreak):

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak..."
(113:1-5)

C. Surah An-Naas (Mankind):

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind..."
(114:1-6)

📌 These are called Mu’awwidhatayn—used by the Prophet ﷺ for protection from all harm.

🕊 Duas of Healing (From Hadith)

1. General Healing Supplication

Transliteration: Allahumma Rabb an-nas adhhib al-ba’sa, ishfi anta ash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka, shifa’an la yughadiru saqama
Translation: “O Allah, Lord of mankind! Remove the harm and heal, You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing – a healing that leaves no trace of illness.”
📘 (Sahih Muslim 2191)

2. When Visiting a Sick Person

لَا بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Translation: "No worry, it is purification (from sins), if Allah wills."
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari 5662)

🔒 Protection from Evil Eye and Jinn

1. Prophet ﷺ said:

“The evil eye is real. If anything were to overtake the Divine decree, it would be the evil eye.”
📘 (Sahih Muslim 2188)

🔹 Protection tip: Recite the Three Quls, and blow over yourself or your children.

💧 How to Perform Ruqyah (Simple Steps)

  1. Intend healing and rely on Allah.

  2. Recite verses like Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, Mu’awwidhatayn.

  3. Blow softly on your hands, then wipe over the body.

  4. May also recite on water, blow in it, and drink or sprinkle it.

☝️ Ruqyah is Not Replacing Medicine

“Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it...”
📘 (Sunan Abi Dawood 3855)

Ruqyah can be used alongside medicine. Tawakkul is on Allah, but we also take the means.

🤲 Powerful Dua for Illness

أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي
Translation: "Remove the harm, O Lord of mankind, and heal – You are the Healer."
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari 5743)

🌙 Ruqyah Before Sleep

Recite the following before sleep:

  • Ayat al-Kursi (Surah 2:255)

  • Three Quls (3x each)

  • Blow on palms and wipe entire body (as Sunnah)

📌 This was the regular night practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
