Prophet Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
The First Messenger to All of Humanity and the Survivor of the Great Flood
🌟 Who Was Prophet Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)?
Prophet Nūḥ (Noah) was one of the five greatest Prophets in Islam, among Ulul-Azm—the steadfast Prophets given a unique mission and tested with extraordinary trials. He was sent by Allah as the first Messenger to all of mankind, after humanity began indulging in idolatry, injustice, and sin following the death of earlier righteous people.
Prophet Nūḥ is one of the most mentioned Prophets in the Qur’an. His story appears in numerous surahs, including Surah Nūḥ, Al-A‘rāf, Hūd, Al-Qamar, and Ash-Shu‘arā’.
🧬 His Lineage and Era
Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is believed to be a descendant of Idrīs (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), from the lineage of Shīth (Seth), the son of Adam. His people lived many centuries after Idrīs, and as time passed, they fell into shirk (associating partners with Allah). Righteous men had passed away, and their followers began to build statues in their honour. Over generations, these images became objects of worship, marking the first appearance of idolatry on Earth.
📖 Qur’anic Mention
"Indeed, We sent Nūḥ to his people, [saying], 'Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment.'"
— Surah Nūḥ 71:1
"He was indeed a grateful servant."
— Surah Al-Isrā’ 17:3
"We certainly sent Nūḥ to his people, and he remained among them for a thousand years minus fifty. Then the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers."
— Surah Al-‘Ankabūt 29:14
🗣️ His Mission and Call to Tawḥīd
Nūḥ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was chosen by Allah to guide his people back to monotheism. His message was simple and universal:
"Worship Allah. You have no deity other than Him. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day."
— Surah Al-A‘rāf 7:59
He tirelessly preached day and night, in public and in private, for 950 years, as the Qur’an tells us. But his people were arrogant, mocking, and stubborn. They placed fingers in their ears, covered themselves with clothes, and resisted his message with intense pride.
"Every time I invited them so that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted in rejection, and became more arrogant."
— Surah Nūḥ 71:7
💔 Rejection by His People
Despite his sincerity, Prophet Nūḥ’s message was accepted by only a small minority—mostly the poor and oppressed. The elites ridiculed him, saying:
"We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we see none follow you but the lowest among us, immature in judgment."
— Surah Hūd 11:27
He remained patient and steadfast, but the opposition grew more aggressive. They mocked him relentlessly and accused him of madness.
🛶 Allah Commands the Ark (Ship) to Be Built
After centuries of rejection, Nūḥ turned to Allah in despair:
"My Lord! I have called my people night and day, but my calling only increases their flight from the truth..."
— Surah Nūḥ 71:5–6
Then, Allah revealed to him:
"None of your people will believe except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing. Build the Ark under Our eyes and inspiration, and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged—they will surely be drowned."
— Surah Hūd 11:36–37
Nūḥ began building the Ark on dry land far from any sea. People mocked him even more—"Are you building a ship in the middle of the desert?"—but he paid no attention.
🌧️ The Great Flood
When the Ark was complete, Allah commanded:
"When Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, 'Load upon it of each kind two mates and your family—except those against whom the word has already gone forth—and those who have believed.' But none believed with him except a few."
— Surah Hūd 11:40
The skies poured rain and water gushed from the earth. A massive, world-engulfing flood began. The Ark floated upon towering waves as punishment descended upon the deniers.
Nūḥ's own son, who refused to board the Ark, drowned in the flood. When Nūḥ pleaded with Allah to save him, Allah replied:
"O Nūḥ, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous."
— Surah Hūd 11:46
This was a reminder that blood ties do not guarantee righteousness—only belief and obedience matter in the sight of Allah.
🕊️ After the Flood
Eventually, the floodwaters receded, and the Ark settled upon Mount Jūdī, as mentioned in the Qur’an:
"And it was said, 'O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold.' And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and the ship came to rest on [Mount] Jūdī."
— Surah Hūd 11:44
Nūḥ emerged with the few believers and began a new life on Earth. He made duʿā’ for peace and barakah, and he lived for some time after the flood before finally passing away. He was remembered as a grateful servant and a Prophet of immense patience, mercy, and strength.
