Prophet Ishaq A.S.

The Story of Prophet Ishāq (Isaac) – عليه السلام

Who was Prophet Ishāq (عليه السلام)?

Prophet Ishāq (Isaac) عليه السلام was the second son of Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham) عليه السلام, born to Sārah (Sarah) in her old age by the miraculous command of Allāh. He is one of the honored Prophets of Islam, mentioned repeatedly in the Qur’ān as a gift, a righteous servant, and a chosen prophet.

He was the father of Prophet Yaʿqūb (Jacob) عليه السلام and the grandfather of Prophet Yūsuf (Joseph) عليه السلام, forming the lineage of many prophets from the Children of Israel (Banī Isrā’īl).

His Name in the Qur’ān

Prophet Ishāq (عليه السلام) is mentioned 17 times in the Qur’ān. He is always described as part of a blessed lineage and as someone who was granted prophethood and divine guidance.

"And We gave him glad tidings of Ishāq, a prophet from among the righteous."
Surah As-Saffāt (37:112)

"And We bestowed upon him Ishāq and Yaʿqūb in addition, and all [of them] We made righteous."
Surah Al-Anʿām (6:84)

📜 Birth of a Miracle

For years, Sārah, the wife of Ibrāhīm (عليه السلام), was barren and had reached old age. But Allāh, out of His Mercy, sent angels in the form of guests to Ibrāhīm with two great news:

  1. The destruction of the people of Lūṭ (Lot)

  2. The glad tidings of a righteous son, Ishāq (عليه السلام)

"They said, 'Do not be afraid. We give you glad tidings of a knowledgeable son.'"
Surah Al-Ḥijr (15:53)

Sārah, astonished and laughing, said:

"Shall I give birth when I am an old woman, and this my husband is an old man?"
Surah Hūd (11:72)

The angels replied:

"Thus has your Lord said; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."
Surah Adh-Dhāriyāt (51:30)

And thus, Ishāq (عليه السلام) was born as a blessed and miraculous child.

🌟 A Lineage of Prophets

Allāh honored Prophet Ishāq (عليه السلام) by blessing his descendants with prophethood and scripture. His son Yaʿqūb (Jacob) and grandson Yūsuf (Joseph) were both prophets, and many more came from his lineage, including:

  • Mūsā (Moses) عليه السلام

  • Hārūn (Aaron) عليه السلام

  • Dāwūd (David) عليه السلام

  • Sulaymān (Solomon) عليه السلام

  • Zakariyyā (Zechariah) عليه السلام

  • Yaḥyā (John) عليه السلام

  • ʿĪsā (Jesus) عليه السلام

This fulfilled Allāh's promise of making Ibrāhīm’s descendants a source of guidance for the world.

"And We placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture..."
Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt (29:27)

🕊️ Character and Personality

Although the Qur’ān doesn’t describe many events from his life, it highlights his piety, status, and role in the continuation of the prophetic legacy.

The Qur’ān describes Ishāq (عليه السلام) as:

  • Righteous (صَالِحِينَ)

  • Knowledgeable (ʿAlīm)

  • Chosen (مُصْطَفِينَا)

  • From the best of people (خَيْرَ ٱلدِّين)

"And We made them leaders, guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakāh; and they were worshippers of Us."
Surah Al-Anbiyā (21:73)

He was also known for:

  • Worship and sincerity

  • Raising righteous children

  • Upholding the message of Tawḥīd (Oneness of Allāh)

🕌 The Continuation of the Message

Prophet Ishāq (عليه السلام) continued the mission of his father — calling people to worship Allāh alone, forbidding idol worship, and living by the laws revealed to him.

He was a prophet for his people, just like his father and son. Though no major stories of opposition or migration are recorded in Islamic sources, scholars say his life was one of peace, leadership, and continuity of guidance.

❤️ Lessons from the Life of Prophet Ishāq (عليه السلام)

1. Allāh Answers Duʿā After Patience

  • Sārah and Ibrāhīm (عليهما السلام) were old, but they never gave up hope. This shows us that nothing is impossible for Allāh.

2. The Value of a Righteous Lineage

  • Through Ishāq came many prophets. Being righteous can bless generations.

3. Faith Over Biology

  • Even in old age and barrenness, Allāh fulfilled His promise. We must trust Allāh’s timing, even when things seem biologically impossible.

4. The Importance of Dua for Righteous Offspring

  • Prophet Ibrāhīm (عليه السلام) consistently made duʿā for righteous descendants, and Allāh honored that prayer.

"My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."
Surah As-Saffāt (37:100)

📚 Prophetic Status & Qur’anic Honors

  • Mentioned by name with other major prophets

  • Listed among those who were
    “guided, chosen, and honored”

  • Associated with revelation, righteousness, and worship

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:136)

🌈 Conclusion

Prophet Ishāq (عليه السلام) represents the continuity of guidance, answered prayers, and Allāh’s mercy upon the patient. His life reminds us that generational righteousness begins with strong foundations and sincere duʿā.

He may not have a story filled with trials like his father or descendants, but his presence in the Qur’ān is one of honor, peace, and divine favor.
