The Story of Prophet Ayyūb (Job) – عليه السلام
“Indeed, We found him patient. What an excellent servant! Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning to Allāh.”
— Surah Ṣād (38:44)
Who was Prophet Ayyūb (عليه السلام)?
Prophet Ayyūb (Job) عليه السلام was a righteous servant of Allāh, known across Islamic tradition for his immense patience, steadfastness, and gratitude in the face of unimaginable suffering.
He was a descendant of Ibrāhīm (Abraham) عليه السلام and lived in an era where he was widely recognized for his piety, wealth, health, and a large, blessed family. But when tested with severe trials, his true character of sabr (patience) and complete trust in Allāh shone like gold.
His story is not about kingship or miracles, but about something greater — faith that remains unshaken through affliction.
📜 A Man of Wealth, Family, and Worship
Before the trials, Ayyūb (عليه السلام) was among the most prosperous people of his time:
-
He had vast lands, herds, and servants
-
He had many children
-
He was known for his piety, justice, and kindness to the poor
Despite his riches, he remained humble, generous, and grateful to Allāh.
⚡ The Test of Suffering
Allāh tested Ayyūb (عليه السلام) with the loss of everything:
-
💰 Wealth – All his livestock, land, and resources were destroyed.
-
👨👩👧👦 Children – All of his children died.
-
🤒 Health – He was afflicted with a severe skin disease that made people abandon him.
-
🏠 Social Isolation – He was driven away from the town.
-
❤️ Loneliness – Only his loyal wife stayed with him, tending to him patiently.
Yet not once did he complain about Allāh.
“And [mention] Ayyūb, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’”
— Surah Al-Anbiyā’ (21:83)
This was his duʿā — no complaint, only acknowledgment of hardship and praise for Allāh.
🧕 His Wife’s Devotion
His wife, though unnamed in the Qur’ān, is celebrated in Islamic tradition for her unwavering love and loyalty. She:
-
Worked to support them when others abandoned him
-
Continued to serve Ayyūb (عليه السلام) despite poverty
-
Encouraged him when he was at his weakest
Even when Ayyūb (عليه السلام) once vowed in frustration that he would strike her for something she said, Allāh taught him a merciful way to fulfill the oath without hurting her.
“And take in your hand a bunch [of grass] and strike with it and do not break your oath.”
— Surah Ṣād (38:44)
This shows that love, mercy, and forgiveness are greater than anger, even in oaths.
💧 The Response from Allāh – Healing and Restoration
After years of suffering, Ayyūb (عليه السلام) turned to Allāh in full humility and hope. Allāh immediately responded:
“So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us...”
— Surah Al-Anbiyā’ (21:84)
Allāh instructed him:
“Strike [the ground] with your foot; this is a [spring for] a cool bath and a drink.”
— Surah Ṣād (38:42)
🌊 A spring gushed forth from the earth — a miraculous healing water. He bathed in it, drank from it, and was completely cured.
🏡 Allāh then returned his family and doubled his wealth and blessings.
